Classroom of the Elite: First Impressions

This anime starts out by quoting Nietzsche and giving a speech about the nature of inequality… OK that’s a bad sign but let’s continue.

Ayanokoji Kiyotaka is a low energy young man who despite having no motivation has been accepted to one of the most prestigious high schools in Japan. His antisocial tendencies make him immediately stand out.  Sitting next to him is Horikita Suzune, a perpetually scowling young woman who shares a last name with the student council president. She has no desires to form ties with anyone and seems to rely on her own intelligence rather than social relations.

The school is pretty much its own city and forbids much outside contact. The students are assigned points instead a cash, and each member of D class is given equivalent to 100,000 yen a month. They immediately start indulging themselves, except for Suzune who only spends a little. The teachers are also indulgent.  Kiyotaka soon starts getting suspicions about this which are soon confirmed when its revealed each instance of bad behavior results in the classes stipend being reduced and when the next month comes they are allotted nothing.

I had my doubts but this seems pretty good. The concept might not be fresh, but its well done. and the animation is also nice.

Classroom of the Elite is not ground breaking on any account and tries to be deeper than it actually is. It’s also really melodramatic, and sometimes cliché, but if you can get past these flaws its enjoyable.  There isn’t steak here but there is some decent beef.
