There is something pleasant about watching people play a
game so bad that it’s good. Listening to their horrified reactions to the cut
scenes, their cursing at the poor controls, I felt a childlike joy. I suppose
its schadenfreude. And the CDI Zelda games seem perfect for this type of
entertainment. The games are renowned for their poor controls, bad animation
and other flaws.
Of course a Let’s Play like this would be pretty boring
without clever commentary. It takes talent to turn one of the worst games ever
made into entertainment. Arin and Dan certainly did the job. Game Grumps has
gotten better over the years and they were certainly on point for Faces of Evil
and Wand of Gamelon. They’ve certainly
gotten better over the years and while there occasional meanderings off topic
can sometimes be annoying this game just throws so much shit at them that they
can’t help talk about it. Watching their initial bemusement turn to confusion
and frustration with jokes in-between was really a joy.
The Let’s Play wasn’t perfect however, in particular for the
Wand of Gamalon it took them far too long to consult a guide. Watching people
fumble to find where they are isn’t very entertaining—especially for these
games. And the use of the Presentation controller for the CDI meant everything
took much longer than it should have. Their play through of The Faces of Evil
had far less kinks to it. Unfortunately
by that point they seem to have gotten used to the horrible gameplay. Only occasionally does Arin throw one of his very entertaining tantrums over
how bad a time he is having.
The Zelda CGI games were some of the best Grump’s I’ve seen.
Towards the end of Faces of Evil Arin mentioned possibly buying the third game
which is rumored to be even worse. Having seen a review of this horrible,
horrible game I can only hope they fork out the money for this vintage hell and
put it on YouTube so I can watch it.
