Most people tend to think of the Star Wars movies as real
Star Wars, but the Clone Wars was better than the prequels they were inspired
by. They may not have the feel of the movies—something that a cartoon could
never hope to capture anyway—but they do have the feel of the old Expanded Universe
which so many Star Wars fans came to love.
The Clone Wars is a series that took me by surprise. At
first I thought it was a flop aimed at children. But after watching a few
episodes I wasn’t yet impressed but I thought I saw something there. And as the
season came and went I saw increasing depth and sophistication in all aspects
of the show. Soon it became my favorite integration of the rise of the empire
era--save for The Darth Plaugus novel. It was a small mercy that it was kept as
cannon when my favorite Star Wars novel was not.
While I have my problems with some of the episode--
especially in the early seasons—Clone Wars holds up. It manages to be complex
and sometimes dark while still being appropriate for a general audience, a
balance that its successor series “Rebels” has not always maintained—thought it
has gotten better with the third season. To me Clone Wars salvaged the prequel
era. As much as people hate the prequel trilogy—more than they deserve: they
were not great but they are hardly the worst movies ever made--at least it gave
us The Clone Wars.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars proved that a Star Wars TV show—a
cartoon no less—could hold its own with the movies in terms of quality and
feel. The huge battles between Jedi and Sith that we all wanted to see but
didn’t get in the prequels—they are all there in the Clone Wars. For Star Wars
fans it’s a can’t miss.
